: Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Friday stressed the importance of Indian Sign Language, pointing out that the technology can be used to help those who are hard of hearing and hard of hearing.

Speaking at an event – ‘Sign Language Awareness Month’ – at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here, the Governor said the Union Government is promoting the cause of deaf and dumb people and people with disabilities.

“The government of Haryana is also committed to the welfare of this section of society. Digital resources and technology can be used effectively to help and support people with speech and hearing impairments,” the governor said.

He commended MDU for taking academic initiatives to promote the teaching and learning of Indian Sign Language.

Haryana Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Om Prakash Yadav said the need of the hour was to create a socially responsive society towards deaf and hard of hearing people.

MDU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajbir Singh said the university has launched two degree programs on teaching and interpreting Indian Sign Language. ENDS
