OTTAWA (ON), May 16, 2022 /CNW/ – Their Excellencies the Right Honorable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canadaand M. Whit Fraser will participate in several elements of the Royal Tour of Canada of Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Royal Tour is one of many ways Canada celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will visit Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Capital Region and Northwest Territories.

Official welcome ceremony at Canada
The Governor General will deliver remarks during the official welcoming ceremony of Their Royal Highnesses at Canada. The public ceremony will feature military honours, including the breaking of the Prince of Wales’ personal flag for use in Canada, and an inspection of an honor guard. The ceremony will also include a prayer in Inuktitut and Mi’kmaq music, as well as lively performances showcasing the province’s rich tradition of songs and stories.

Heart Garden at Government House
In the spirit of reconciliation, Their Excellencies will join Their Royal Highnesses, Indigenous leaders and community members for a solemn moment of reflection and prayer in the Heart Garden at Government House.

The Heart Gardens are created in memory of all the Indigenous children who were lost to the residential school system, in recognition of those who survived, and to honor the families of both.

Order of Military Merit Investiture Ceremony
His Royal Highness will be invested with the title of Commander Extraordinary of the Order of Military Merit by the Governor General. Lt. General Frances AllenVice Chief of the Defense Staff will also be present.

This year marks the 50e anniversary of the Order of Military Merit, created to recognize the distinctive merit and exceptional service of members of the Canadian Armed Forces, both Regular Force and Reserve.

National War Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony
Their Excellencies will accompany Their Royal Highnesses at a ceremony at the National War Memorial in honor of Canadian veterans and active military personnel.
The ceremony will include a bugle performance of “Last Post”, followed by a minute of silence, and “Reveille” (the Awakening); a bagpiper playing “The Lament”, and the laying of a wreath and bouquet by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Fast facts

  • It will be the 19th of the Prince of Walese visit Canada and the Duchess of from Cornwall fifth visit.
  • This will be the second time the Governor General has met the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. She first met them when she visited London, United Kingdomin March 2022.
  • The couple’s most recent royal tour Canada was conducted from June 29 to July 1, 2017during which they visited Iqaluit, Nunavut; Trenton, Wellington and Ottawa, Ontario; and Gatineau, Quebec.
