Washington, DC – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement to mark the 57th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), which was signed into law on August 6, 1965:

“On this day, 57 years ago, our nation took a historic step toward a more perfect union with the historic Voting Rights Act, helping to realize our founding ideal: government of the people, by and for the people. . This transformative achievement — made possible by generations of Americans who bravely fought, marched and organized — cracked down on racist voter discrimination and opened the doors to polling places across the country. Yet nearly six decades after this pillar of justice and democracy was enacted, extreme MAGA Republicans are still trying to erase Americans’ sacred right to vote and even nullify the results of fair and free elections. .

“Dropped by the disastrous Supreme Court decision Shelby vs. Holder decision, Republican state lawmakers are waging a vicious campaign against the founding of our Republic — seeking to challenge the legitimacy of our elections and turn back the clock on voting access for communities of color. House Democrats are determined to oppose this brazen assault on democracy, and we have fought alongside tireless campaigners to pass the federal voting protections we urgently need. Inspired unceasingly by the courage and sacrifice of its heroic namesake, our House Democratic majority passed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the heart of the VRA and eradicate voter discrimination wherever it appears. The House also twice passed Democrats’ For The People Act to fight GOP voter suppression, end partisan gerrymandering, and remove black money from our politics: crucial steps in revitalizing American democracy.

“House Democrats will never waver in our fight to enact these measures into law. As MAGA Republicans continue to attack our democracy and undermine our elections, we are focused on putting the people above politics: ensuring that every American has a say in the fate of our nation.
