WILMINGTON, Del. – United States Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) today issued the following statement on the passing of Moon Landrieu, former Mayor of New Orleans and Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Carter’s presidency:

“Moon was a beloved leader whose deep concern for people and commitment to racial justice made him widely respected not only in Louisiana, but across our country. His strong commitment to public service inspired the careers of his children, including his daughter, Mary, former state treasurer and three-term senator, and son, Mitch, former lieutenant governor, mayor of New Orleans. and now special adviser to President Biden. for the implementation of the bipartisan infrastructure law.

“Several years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting New Orleans, where I was able to sit with Moon and his wife, Verna, and my friend and Senate colleague Mary at Cafe Du Monde while “They held court, greeting and enjoying the company of friends from all walks of life. It was obvious that Moon was such a valued leader in his community; his kindness and personal focus on everyone he spoke with was abundantly clear.

“As the Landrieu family lost their patriarch, the nation also lost a wonderful and gracious man. Annie and I send our deepest condolences and prayers to Moon’s wife, Verna, as well as to Mary, Mitch and the entire Landrieu family.
