Wendy Tuckerman – Minister of Local Government

The New South Wales Government has committed to severing the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council in accordance with the recommendations of the Local Government Boundaries Commission and the strong support of the local community.
This is a very complex undertaking, and I have asked the Office of Local Government to provide advice on the way forward under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1993.
While the split process is ongoing, I have made it clear that I expect the Board to continue to act in the best interests of the entire community.
This includes refraining from making decisions that would unduly limit the future decisions or operations of new Boards.
The OLG has issued guidelines to Cootamundra Gundagai to support this approach during the development of a transition plan and process.
This process is ongoing and I look forward to working with the Council as we continue down the path of separation.
I acknowledge the community’s interest in this process and we will provide regular updates as we move forward.
We remain committed to holding elections for the new councils at the next ordinary local elections in September 2024.
I thank the Cootamundra-Gundagai council and the community for their understanding as we navigate the complex challenges of the council split.
