A STATE funeral will be held Thursday at Christ Church Cathedral for former Governor General and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Dion Hanna.

Yesterday, a Cabinet Office statement also announced that Mr Hanna’s body would rest today in the foyer of the House of Assembly.

The general public will be allowed to view his body from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.

A period of mourning will begin at sunrise today until sunset Thursday. During this time, the national flag will fly at half mast across the country.

The funeral at Christ Church Cathedral on George Street will be by invitation only, and in accordance with COVID-19 Emergency Orders, 2020, and Bahamian Christian Council Social Distancing Protocols, with respect to church services and the number of seats.

Those invited to the service are requested to be seated before 10:45 a.m.

Mr. Hanna, the ardent progressive whose faith in Bahamians helped push the country towards independence and sparked the era-defining Bahamianization policy, died at his home on August 3 at the age of 93 .

He was Deputy Prime Minister from 1967 to 1984 and held various ministerial portfolios during his tenure, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance responsible for the civil service, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of the Interior. with responsibility for immigration.

He was Governor General from 2006 to 2010.
