(Manchester, NH) – US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has issued the following statement in response to new anti-women and anti-choice laws led by state Republicans and enacted by the governor that come into force January 1st. laws include a ban on unnecessary and expensive abortions and ultrasounds.

“No one should be allowed to tell a woman when or how to start a family. Tragically, Republicans in New Hampshire believe they have this right and have ushered in dangerous new laws that come into effect today that attempt to control women’s bodies and their most personal health decisions. It is shocking to see these radical anti-women policies spreading in New Hampshire and every effort must be made to lessen the damage that Republicans in New Hampshire have caused ”, said Shaheen. “We have seen sweeping attacks on women’s health that touch every corner of the country and make health decisions that women should make in consultation with their doctors and crush them in front of State Houses, Congress and now the Supreme Court. These are personal decisions; these are medical decisions that should be made by women and those they trust. For fifty years the Supreme Court has ruled as the law of the land. But now Republicans in New Hampshire – and Republicans across the country – are trying to turn the clock back. We cannot let them do it. I will continue to find ways to help our frontline family planning centers and increase women’s access to the reproductive health services they need and deserve. As long as these attacks continue, I will continue to fight back.

The blatant attacks by Republican lawmakers in New Hampshire on women’s health have been further exacerbated in recent days by the Executive Council, which has doubled its decision to reimburse New Hampshire family planning providers statewide. Three of the providers funded by the Executive Board provide about 80 percent of family planning services in New Hampshire.

In response to these unprecedented attacks on the health and personal decisions of New Hampshire women, Shaheen and the Congressional delegation fought to make federal funding available to compensate for funds stripped or denied to providers by Republicans in the United States. ‘State. Following calls from the delegation, the Biden administration announced in October that it would make $ 256,000,000 available to Title X providers for fiscal year (FY) 2022. Title X funding is critical for New Hampshire family planning providers who were decimated by the title of the previous administration. X Gag Rule, leaving seven of nine New Hampshire vendors without access to Title X funding. Vendors have until Jan. 11, 2022 to apply. In June, Senator Shaheen sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra urging him to provide support to family planning providers in New Hampshire who will lose state funding under the bill. New Hampshire State Republican Budget.

Last month, Shaheen wrote an op-ed for Seacoast Online on issues for women in New Hampshire and across the country, according to the United States Supreme Court. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case that could overturn Roe vs. Wade.
