OTTAWA, ON, September 17, 2021 / CNW / – Today, in a ceremony at Rideau Hall, Her Excellency the Right Honorable Mary May Simon, Governor General of Canada, presented the honors to 14 exceptional Canadians. The ceremony was attended by a small group of socially distant family and friends who joined us in celebrating the recipients and their accomplishments.

The Canadian Honors System recognizes extraordinary individuals and their outstanding contributions to Canada. Today’s recipients come from all walks of life, who share a desire to achieve excellence by contributing to their community and to Canadawhether through heroic deeds, remarkable deeds or exceptional volunteerism.

Nominations for Canadian honors are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Spotlight an extraordinary person by nominating them for a Canadian honor.

  • Encouraging excellence is at the heart of the mandate of every Governor General.
  • The Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil Division) recognize individuals who have performed an act of the highest standard, bringing honor to Canada. These actions range from advocacy initiatives or fundraising campaigns to providing services to local communities.
  • The Bravery Decorations celebrate courageous individuals who risked their lives in an attempt to save someone in imminent danger.
  • The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the outstanding volunteer accomplishments of Canadians and honors their dedication and commitment.
  • Anyone can nominate someone for a Canadian honor. Each nomination is considered before being considered by an independent committee or advisory board, which then makes recommendations to the Governor General.
