TORONTO, May 11, 2022 /CNW/ – The Queen’s York Rangers Regimental Council
Media are invited to watch Her Excellency the Right Honorable Mary Simon, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canadapresent a new Handlebar to the Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment) (RCAC) at Fort York National Historic Site on the 14th May 2022.
The Honorable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, OC, OOnt., Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Colonel of the Regiment, His Excellency Whit Fraser, CC, wife of the Governor General Mary Simon as well as other dignitaries of Toronto and York Region, as well as some of the Regiment’s many friends and supporters.
Historically a hallowed flag carried by a military unit as a rallying point in battle, the Guidon is today a symbol of spirit, history and sacrifice and a unit’s most honored possession. It records the heroic actions of the soldiers of the regiment and embodies the ideals of duty, tradition and honor. The new Ranger Guidon incorporates some of the many battle honors awarded to the regiment, including five new honours: queenstonniagara, DetroitProhibited Canada 1812-1815, and Afghanistan.
The predecessor of the Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment) (RCAC) was the Queen’s Rangers, a loyalist unit of the British Army, which received its first colors during the American Revolutionary War. Commander, John Graves Simcoe refused to surrender the colors at Yorktown in 1781 and smuggled them to Britain. Almost two centuries later, they were discovered and returned to the regiment and are now on display in the officers’ mess at the Fort York Armoury. These are the oldest known colors in North America and among the oldest in the world.
Built by the Queen’s Rangers in 1793, Fort York (now Fort York National Historic Site) is a living historic monument with close ties to the Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment) (RCAC) headquartered at the Fort York Armory adjacent.
