Governor Jay Inslee released a statement today on the Republican National Committee’s decision to censor two of his own members of Congress for investigating the violent Jan. 6 uprising on our nation’s Capitol.

“Today, the National Republican Party endorsed violent sedition as ‘legitimate political speech.’ The GOP censured two of its own congressmen solely for their consistency and integrity. They want the insurgency to look normal. This depraved effort is part of the ongoing coup against our Constitution led by Donald Trump.

“From insurrection and vigilantism on the streets to GOP-led voter suppression in the halls of power, we continue to see just how much American democracy is in jeopardy today. I once again call on the leaders of all political parties to condemn what happened on January 6, 2021; recognize the legitimate election of Joe Biden as President; and disavow this brazen authoritarian course that has only gained momentum since the Capitol insurrection. I congratulate those who have already done so.

“The threat is real. That’s exactly why I asked for legislation to hold politicians accountable when their election happens to lead to more violence. Today’s endorsement of the insurgency by the Republican Party establishment only heightens my fear that this violence will continue. I hope our legislature will stand up and be counted against this ongoing electoral lie by enacting protections for our democracy.

“This coup will not go away until people of integrity, honesty, consistency and selflessness from all walks of life take action. We need a united front in this battle, and today the GOP apparatus national said “no.” History will not forget and we cannot forgive this moral failure of leadership.
