His death was confirmed in a statement from his family on Sunday evening.

“Our beloved Cath passed away peacefully this evening, October 31, from a long illness: at home with her family around her, as she wished,” the statement read.

“She was a woman of incredible energy, intelligence and warmth. She had a long and distinguished life in public service. She was a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother. ; and a confidante, mentor, and friend to many others. We will miss her more than we can ever say. “

The family’s statement indicated that they had wished for private cremation and that they hoped to find a way to honor her memory in public in the future.

“We are grateful to all of her friends, our extended family and caregivers, especially her GP, who have also supported and loved her over the years,” her family said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she was deeply saddened by the death of Dame Catherine and paid tribute to her “long and distinguished life in the service” of New Zealand.

“In everything she has done, she has demonstrated her remarkable qualities of leadership and determination, combined with a down-to-earth approach and an unstoppable sense of humor,” said Ardern.

“Our hearts are with his family at this time.”
