Senate Speaker Ahmed Lawan said the remarks made by President Muhammmadu Buhari at the budget signing ceremony were natural and logical.
The Senate Speaker said this during an interaction with State House correspondents shortly after the President enacted Appropriation Bill 2022 at the Presidential Villa yesterday.
Lawan, who noted that the president was happy with most of the contents of the budget, said the observations were not things people should worry about, adding that the executive and the legislature would iron out their differences.
Lawan said: “I think the most important thing is that the President is satisfied with the majority of what the National Assembly has done and that is the most critical thing that we need to focus on.
As for the observations made by the President, it is a natural and logical tendency between the executive and the legislature. “Sometimes our views on certain issues are not necessarily the same as those the executive has and has on a particular issue.
So I’m not thinking about what the chair did, raising some comments as something we should be concerned about. I’m glad the president signed the budget in the first place. And he said, you have to go back to the National Assembly to ask for amendments or a transfer, and it’s a natural, logical legislative process.
So I’m glad we’ve done our part in our own way. ” Streamlining the increase made by lawmakers over the original budget estimates, Lawan said: ‘This is based on judgments when we requested more resources from From independent sources, especially SOEs of around N400 to 500 billion, is because we believe these SOEs should contribute even more.
“In fact, I think they should have contributed around a trillion, at least not 500 billion naira.
So I think the National Assembly was right in its judgment, but there is nothing wrong with the government executive coming back to the National Assembly to see how we can dialogue and follow the process and see where is the misunderstanding. But I don’t think that’s supposed to be a worrying development for us. “
