Rajasthan: PLC meeting at Gehlot residence on Sunday amid leadership change
Congress convened a meeting of its Legislative Party in Rajasthan at Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s residence in Jaipur at 7 p.m. on Sunday, amid leadership change buzz after news it will contest the party chairman’s ballot .
Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed Mallikarjun Kharge as an observer alongside Secretary General in charge of Rajasthan Ajay Maken. They will attend the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, AICC Secretary General KC Venugopal said on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Maken met with Sonia Gandhi and discussed issues related to Rajasthan in detail.
This is the second PLC meeting in a week. The last meeting took place on September 20.
Sources said that the direction of government in the future, if Gehlot is elected party leader, will likely be on the agenda of the meeting.
Gehlot became the first person to announce his candidacy in the AICC presidential ballot on Friday and said former President Rahul Gandhi told him that no member of the Gandhi family should become the party’s next leader.
The chief minister also said that the call for his successor will be taken by Sonia Gandhi and Maken.
Gehlot’s remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi championed the “one man, one position” concept in the party, in line with the “Chintan Shivir” reforms.
Speaking to reporters in Kochi, Gehlot said, “I will set the date (to submit the application documents) after I return (to Rajasthan), but I have decided that I will have to contest. It is a matter of democracy and let’s start afresh.” Later that day, Gehlot told reporters in Shirdi that the “one man, one post” debate was unnecessary and that he would like to serve the people of his state all his life.
He also said that his statements about wanting to serve the people of Rajasthan were interpreted in different ways.
Interestingly, Congress leader Sachin Pilot met with Rajasthan Assembly Speaker CP Joshi on Friday amid speculation of a changing of the guard in the state.
Pilot had met Joshi in his room at the State Assembly, where several party deputies were also present.
According to party sources, Pilot is the leading contender for chief minister, but Joshi’s name is also making the rounds.
Joshi is a former state congressman and was running for office in 2008, but lost the assembly election by one vote at the time.
